The kitchen is the hub of the household and not only do we fix food in the kitchen but we store food and other items, we also eat in the kitchen too. The cabinets are opened and closed throughout the day when we are preparing to fix a meal or looking for a snack. In addition, grease and grime can build up over time from cooking. Kitchen cabinet cleaning should be part of your daily, weekly and yearly cleaning routines.
For the most part, cabinets are now made out of either hard wood or a pressed wood. The varieties of woods that are used can be pine, maple and cherry. Some cabinets have solid wood doors and then the inside is of a lesser quality. Sometimes, the bottoms and the shelves all have a smooth texture or the bottom may be a little rough and the shelves are smooth. This difference in texture means a different process was used to make the wood. Custom kitchens will probably have more detail to the cabinetry as well as have storage spaces inside the cabinets to benefit the chef. This will need to be addressed when cleaning as well.
The level of kitchen cabinet cleaning that will need to be done will vary upon how dirty your kitchen gets on a regular basis. In general, the inside should be addressed perhaps once or twice a year and of course the outside more frequently. The tools and cleaning solutions to clean the cabinets will vary as well.
In regards to the inside, if there have not been any issues with little critters, the cabinets that hold your dinnerware as well as cups and glasses should not need much other than perhaps a good dusting or vacuum. The cupboards that contain food will need more attention when kitchen cabinet cleaning is performed. There might have been spills that will need to be cleaned. Warm soapy water and a clean cloth or sponge will work well to wipe out the inside as well as clean up any messes. If honey or syrup dripped, the area should soak under a damp cloth for a bit, making it easy to wipe clean.
Kitchen cabinet cleaning on the outside is much less of a hassle. Wiping the areas that were touched in the process of making a meal should be wiped with a clean and squeezed soapy cloth. When wiping down the outside, it is best to squeeze out as much water as possible as to not leave water on the wood. If you need to, you can go back over the areas that were cleaned with a clean dry towel and that should be sufficient. The cabinets that are closer to the stove will need more attention than those that are further away.
The outside of the cabinets may also need a good rub down with an oil or wax that is designed for wood. This can be done yearly or every other year and will help to protect the wood and keep it looking new. The proper kitchen cabinet cleaning will depend on the level of usage they get and how much grease and grime fill the kitchen air.
